Wilp Si Wilaxsinsxwhl Simgigyet (Chiefs House of Learning), Gitwangak
The Principal/Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day management, administration, leadership, and supervision of Wilp Si Wilaxsinxswhl Simgigyet. The Principal/Teacher ensures the effective integration of Gitxsan culture, history and language into the education curriculum.
Employment QUALIFICATIONS
Master of Education (Administrative Leadership)
Bachelor of Education Degree
Teaching Experience – minimum of 5 years, preferably in a First Nations School
In-depth knowledge of the BC Education curriculum
Administrative Experience- minimum of 2 years
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Experience with budgets
Conflict Resolution and Management
Clear Criminal Record Check working with vulnerable populations
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRINCIPAL/TEACHER:
• Coordinates with key stakeholders to develop the strategic and operational planning of the School Programs and activities;
• Facilitates and ensures the personal and professional development of school staff;
• Manages and supervises the daily operations of Wilp Si Wilaxsinxswhl Simgigyet activities, programs, staff and students;
• Designs and implements a Community Relations program, providing ongoing information regarding school activities, achievements, needs and direction to the Community;
• Plans, implements and monitors a K-7 program and curriculum, ensuring integration of Gitksen First Nation’s Culture, History and Language;
• Coordinates regular testing and assessment of students, making provisions for students requiring special needs services as required and ensures instructional staff are trained in current recognition and assessment techniques;

Wage: starting at $90,000 and is dependent upon experience and qualifications

Qualifications:

BC Teaching Certificate

3-5 years of teaching experience

Gitxsan language and culture knowledge an asset

Ability to incorporate First Nations content across the curriculum

Land based projects across the curriculum throughout the year are fundamental

Criminal Record Check mandatory
Related Experience:

Experience teaching multi grade classrooms

Set high expectations and academic achievement for all students in a safe and nurturing environment

Experience with Read Well, Nelson Literacy, Jump Math and Math Makes Sense

Knowledge and experience with Acadience and CAT 2 Assessment tools

Differentiate curriculum expectations and teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students

Team approach to working with colleagues, educational assistants, and support staff

Excellent inter-personal skills when engaging parents, community members, and elders in residence

Ability to create on the land experiences in a safe manner
