Exceeding Your Expectations

HEADSTART / DAYCARE

  • Strong-Start Outreach Program - This program provides scheduled visits for early learning activities in child’s home in preparation for Kindergarten. Activities such as story-time, music, art, are some of the activities while parents are taught how to support learning.

  • Daycare (Wa’umhl Simgigyet) “Cradle of our Language” – This fully licensed daycare program provides and operates full-day daycare services for both on-reserve and off-reserve members. Educational learning activities include story-time, songs, arts & crafts, drama, nap-time and language and culture activities. As well, the daycare provides a hot breakfast and lunch.

WILP SI'WILAKSINXWHL SIMGIGYET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Our Elementary School offers Kindergarten - Grade 3 Immersion Afternoon classes which include Socials, Science, Physical Education and Total Physical Response (An effective method of teaching languages) taught by the fluent speakers of Simalgyax, with the guidance of the teacher. We work closely with the Simgi'gyets (Chiefs) and First Nation's Education Steering Committee (FNESC). FNESC staff support our teachers and staff through out the year to offer on going training in programs for student success in Reading, Writing and Math.

Sharing Student

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

The Gitwangak Adult School program has assisted many community members earn their Adult Dogwood Certificates and has provided tutoring for high school students. This program offers one-on-one teaching, in a relaxed environment. The facilities consist of a large classroom, small study area, and a computer lab.

Programs Include: 

  • Academic Courses

  • Employment Readiness Training

  • Gitxsan Language & Culture 

  •  Physical Education

  • COOP Program

  • Skills Link Program

  • Employment Certificates: Food Safe 1, WHMIS, OFA 1, and much more

  • Cooking Classes

  • Tuition is free

  • Income assistance clients may still be eligible for assistance while enrolled in the ABE program

COMMUNITY TRAINING

The GES in partnership with sponsoring organizations (TRICORP, Gitxsan Development Corp, and other) has brought many short-term employment certificate courses to Gitwangak for Community members. Some training courses brought to Gitwangak include: 

  • Heavy Equipment Operator

  • Cultural Tourism

  • Aboriginal Early Childhood Education

  • Class 1 Driver Training

  • Carpentry Foundations Certificate

  • Environmental Technician Certificate

  • Aboriginal Community Economic Development Diploma

  • and Many More Certificates

STARTING SEPTEMBER 2022: UBC-NITEP see the UBC website to apply to become a FN Teacher.

POST SECONDARY

The Gitwangak Education Society sponsors Registered Gitwangak Band Members to further their post-secondary education. For over 20 years, the Gitwangak Education Society has sponsored over 600 students. To be eligible for Post-Secondary Sponsorship you must:

  • Be a registered Gitwangak Band Member

  • Possess any pre-requisites for your desired course program

  • Complete and submit the GES PSSR Application by May 15th of every year

  • Any PSSR Applications that are incomplete or handed in past the due date will be placed on the Wait List.

  • DEADLINE FOR POST-SECONDARY APPLICATION PACKAGES IS MAY 15TH OF EVERY YEAR YOU WISH TO BE SPONSORED.
